Graphic Design Journey

Every interest together with every skill learned is rooted in an epic tale. This is mine.

Graphic Design is an Art

I feel that Graphic Design is an Art and not so much a skill that can be taught. Yes, one can learn professional programs to create art, but somehow, I always feel whether something looks right or not. I mostly create infographics for sports social media, so my designs usually have a purposeful message. It doesn't mean that I haven't created art pieces in the past.

Growing up, I used to enjoy recreating images that I dreamt about. First, they were pencil sketches which later became acrylic paintings. As a secret goth enthusiast, I enjoy dabbing into the terms used by one of my favourite YouTube storytellers, "weird, dark and mysterious".

For me, Video editing and graphic design walked hand in hand. Both depend on working with layers while including integral knowledge of the colour spectrum. I still struggle to recreate what I imagine at times, but sometimes the pictures reveal themselves after a bit of work. My skills are evolving continuously as I face more challenges, but as the challenges are frustrating me to figure out how to solve them, the processes are always enjoyable. I usually get there in the end.

" Art sprouts from within"

Not at all gifted with musical talent, even non-artists get a sense when a song sounds right or not. I get that feeling when a picture is right or not. It might sound like I come off as Gay, but although I have no issues with that kind of orientation, it's just not for me right now, I instantly know when a picture pops or not. Sometimes I get the impression that I should dial it down when my work pops too much.

Writers' biggest fear is getting writer's block. I personally haven't experienced that, but my images sometimes only evolve after a while. Like my favourite author, Stephen King, the end stretch sometimes is as much of a surprise to me as the one who sees my work. It is like planting a seed and seeing how it grows from there.

The beautiful analogy is when a boat leaves a harbour for a destination. The course will change over time, but it needs to start moving in order for changes to happen.

Stephen King explained it beautifully when he said that it is like starting from a little flame in a big dark forest. The light source expands slowly to reveal what is lurking in the darkness. This is how the master describes a journey that his characters undertake without giving much thought to the indoctrinated teachings about predetermined structures.

I believe strongly that the structures are safety nets for those who don't have an instinct about whether something feels right or not and only limit the creative process of those who do.

Creating images is fun, just like cooking interesting dishes. With more experience, they tend to have better outcomes. According to taste, they will always be a hit or a miss, but with good communication about the needs of the story that needs to be told, a successful outcome usually become more of a regular occurance.
